Silage Time

"We’ve been busy making silage in the fields of Reedy Fork Organic Farm. Our silage is made from the entire corn plant and sorghum sudan grass. We grow it, chop it, auger it, dump it, pile it, pack it, and cover it in trench silo. What is a trench silo you ask? Simply put a large hole in the side of a hill that is floored with concrete and has concrete blocks running through the middle of it. As the trench silo fills we pack it and then cover the silage and keep it air tight. The silage is covered for two months to ferment and then fed to our cows over the winter when the grass is low in the pastures. And, because our farm is organic, our silage is too!
