One of the cool things about the internet is that we can look back at the posts we've made over the years, and see how many people have been reading them. One of the most popular posts that we have ever made is ""Salty Dog – Why do Animals Need Salt?"" The post explains why animals can't survive without taking a lick of salt.
The post references a song called ""Salty Dog"". Through the years it was sung by Earl Scruggs, Andy Griffith and the Darlings, and many more. But it's been a long time since we've heard it, and we started thinking that some of the people who read our posts may not have heard the song, much less know what a salty dog is.
So - here you go. A salty dog is an old hillbilly term that meant best friend or girlfriend/boyfriend. Back in the day, salt was rubbed on dogs to keep ticks away. Since salt was hard to come by, only the best dog got the salty treatment. Somehow or another, the term morphed to mean girlfriend/boyfriend. And of course, the song followed. Take your pick, or listen to all three, and figure out which one is your salty dog!
